Neutropenia & Thoracentesis & Football

Neutropenia is a low level of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell. All white blood cells help the body fight infection. Neutrophils fight infection by destroying harmful bacteria and fungi or yeast that invade the body.

Erik's white blood cell count is at 0.5.   (Normal range is 2.5-7.5.)
We have an eventful weekend planned.  Docs say to be careful and wear a mask and wash hands thoroughly and often.  We are going up north to Justin's football game in Provo, his A-Team closing banquet in Logan and a cousin's missionary farewell in Farmington.  Can all this - up north - have been planned better being on the same weekend!?   Because Docs say... you need to keep living life.  And Erik says... YOLO.  Lets Just Do It.

It does prevent the upcoming Alaska Adventure though.  :(  We need to cancel plane tickets for next week.

It's also being canceled because of Erik's continual fluid in his lungs.

Thoracentesis is a procedure to remove fluid from the space between the lungs and the chest wall called the pleural space. It is done with a needle (and sometimes a plastic catheter) inserted through the chest wall. Ultrasound pictures are often used to guide the placement of the needle.

He had this done last Saturday and again yesterday.  Both times, about 1200 ml were extracted.  Dang.  It is common with cancer.  It is either caused my radiation treatments (has a tumor in the ribs they were aiming at for pain relief) or it could be caused by the cancer nodules in the lungs.  Testing is being done of the fluid to see why it happens.  If it's from the radiation... then it only takes time to heal and this won't be a regular occurrence for a Thoracentesis.
If its the cancer itself, then Erik will become a regular.
We'll have to get him a punch card.  Is the tenth one free?

I am excited about Justin's upcoming football season!  Woo hoo!

He's starting Offensive Left Guard.
And will see quite a bit of playing time on Defense.
You rock, Justin!
